SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A push to hold landlords accountable failed before the Springfield City Council Tuesday evening.

Despite a 5-4 vote in favor of the plan, it failed to secure enough votes to be put on the March ballot.

Springfield alderman had previously hoped to put a referendum on the ballot.

The referendum would have required a landlord registry and licensing program to ensure property owners are taking care of homes.
