Seven schools remain closed in the ACT as the clean up of coloured sand that may contain asbestos continues.

In a statement the ACT government said the process of cleaning up and reopening schools may "take several days".

At its peak, 70 public schools were closed in the ACT after several coloured sand products were recalled by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission following testing which found traces of asbestos.

ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry said more sand was being found in schools that had been cleaned and certified, but it was being dealt with and would not force re-closures.
