COLUMBUS – The Ohio House Education Committee gave its approval Tuesday to legislation that will require public schools to show students a video of fetal development, despite concerns from health experts that the video promoted by the bill’s sponsor is medically inaccurate.
The committee voted 8-4 to send House Bill 485 , known as the “Baby Olivia Act,” to the full house.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Melanie Miller, an Ashland Republican, would mandate that schools incorporate at least a three-minute video featuring detailed animations or ultrasound imagery of early human development into any public-school course covering human growth, development or sexuality beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.
Six states had enacted similar legislation — Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, North Dako
