The best chance Valley high school football players have of scoring against the Liberty Lions defense is if they move to another state. This 9-1 team’s lone regular season loss was at national top 40 team Copper Canyon in Draper, Utah by a 45-14 score.
In the nine other games against Arizona teams the Lions allowed a combined 65 points. Five of those nine opponents ended the season ranked in the top 11 of the 6A Conference and all five were in play-in games for the Open Division on Nov. 14.
The 2024 defense certainly did not hinder Liberty from repeating as Open Division champions, but allowed a shade above 20 points per game. Returning starters, led by five NCAA Division I signees, wanted more.
