The law enforcement officers who police the Michigan Capitol will soon have expanded powers to investigate threats against lawmakers and provide them extra security outside the Capitol complex.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill into law Nov. 18 making the changes, which will take effect next year.
Sergeants at arms' policing jurisdiction currently includes the Capitol building and grounds, legislative office buildings and legislative parking areas. But they will soon have the authority to provide security where necessary to protect lawmakers, along with lawmakers' family members or staff members, in response to threats or crimes targeting lawmakers because of their work in elected office. They will also provide security at events lawmakers attend as part of their job.
