Kemi Badenoch suggested the Budget later this month has already happened in an embarrassing gaffe at prime minister’s questions.

The Tory leader had to be reminded by Keir Starmer that it is actually happening next week.

Badenoch had tried to embarrass the PM over chancellor Rachel Reeves’ U-turn on her plans to break Labour’s manifesto pledge by increasing income tax.

She said: “Can the prime minister tell us why his government is the first government in history to float increasing income tax rates only to then U-turn on it all after the actual Budget?”

Her garbled question prompted confused looks and laughter from MPs.

The PM then said: “I’d inform her that the Budget is actually next week. We’ve only got one week to go.”
