A man was arrested in Lyndon, Vermont, after a 7-year-old child was found wandering in the cold on the side of the road Tuesday night.

Vermont State Police say they were first notified about the child on Depot Street around 8:35 p.m., and troopers who responded to the scene learned the child had wandered outside after having been left home alone "for an extended period of time."

Jared Anderson , 34, was taken into custody without incident, police said, and he is facing a charge of cruelty to a child.

Temperatures have been in the teens and low 20s in parts of New England this week.

Police haven't said who took custody of the boy Tuesday night following Anderson's arrest.
