In 1979 Major League Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn suspended Willie Mays from MLB-Mays was a glad hander at an Atlantic City casino. In 1983, Mickey Mantle snared a similar position with a casino- Kuhn suspended him too. Both players, long retired, needed the jobs. In 1985, new Commissioner Peter Uberroth reinstated Mays and Mantle.
In 2018, the U.S. Supreme legalized sports betting. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred speaking at the 2024 Associated Press Sports Editors Commissioners Meetings said, “... one of the advantages of legalization is it’s a heck of a lot easier to monitor what’s going on than it is with an illegal operation.”
Huh. He acts as though MLB didn’t reap a financial bonanza from their illicit relationship with legalized betting.
