Keir Starmer has revealed the closure-threatened Mossmorran plant in Fife is losing £1m a week after its American owners blamed the UK Government for the shut-down.
Texas-based ExxonMobil announced it was pulling out of the Fife Ethylene Plant yesterday after 40 years in a move that could cost hundreds of jobs.
But Starmer told MPs today the business was no longer viable and would not receive UK Government support.
ExxonMobil chairman Paul Greenwood had tried to claim the closure was partly down to “deliberate” decisions taken by Labour ministers.
He said there are “four keys to success” in the sector – a cheap and abundant supply of ethane, along with low-cost operations, good market prices for ethylene and a skilled workforce.
