An elderly man was hit and killed by a car as he was walking across the street to check his mailbox in Durham, Maine, Tuesday evening.

Authorities responded around 5:01 p.m. to the intersection of Royalsborough Road and Smith Farm Road for a report of a motor vehicle versus pedestrian crash, according to the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office. The pedestrian, identified as 85-year-old Peter Lowe, died from his injuries at the scene.
