MADISON, Wis. (WKBT) — Wisconsin is appealing the federal government's decision to deny disaster relief funding for communities hit by severe storms and flooding in August .

Gov. Tony Evers announced Wednesday the state is challenging two separate denials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for disaster assistance programs. The storms caused more than $27.5 million in damages across six Wisconsin counties.

The federal government denied Wisconsin's requests for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation grant programs in October , saying the requests "are not warranted."

State officials say the damage total is more than double Wisconsin's threshold for FEMA Public Assistance, which typically qualifies communities for federal aid.
