Queen’s Park is signaling it may eliminate the elected officials who oversee the province’s 76 school boards.

The issue gained traction 14 months ago after public outrage over alleged financial mismanagement scandals in several Ontario school boards, including London-based Thames Valley, and other large boards in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel Region.

Following an extensive review, Education Minister Paul Calandra introduced Bill 33 that gives the ministry greater powers over the $32-billion school system. The legislation allows the government to place errant boards under supervision and reintroduce school resource officers amid rising concerns over school violence.
