MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Madison Police Department said Wednesday the driver found dead after a vehicle fire on the city’s east side earlier this week drove off after a Dane County deputy tried to pull him over.

MPD said the driver took off from the traffic stop, and the Dane County Sheriff’s Office deputy did not chase the vehicle.

The police department did not say where the attempted traffic stop had occurred, and it’s unclear why the deputy tried to pull the driver over.

According to an incident report, witnesses told MPD that the driver was speeding northbound on South Stoughton Road when he drove into a ditch on the the median-side of the road.

MPD said the vehicle drove out of the ditch, went across all northbound lanes and then crashed into a tree.
