NEW ORLEANS —
Families across New Orleans say they are living in conditions that threaten their health and safety. From leaking ceilings and broken air conditioning to rodents, holes in walls and fears about fire safety, renters told WDSU Investigates they are tired of waiting for help.
“It’s deplorable, it’s unlivable,” one tenant said. “But we still have to live here because we can’t find a place that will take us.” Advertisement
At the Willows Apartments in New Orleans East, residents described years of frustration. Some said they killed more than 20 rats inside their units. Others said their air conditioning and plumbing have been broken for months and that maintenance calls go unanswered.
When WDSU visited the complex, one mother showed us missing or broken smoke detectors.
