ATLANTA — The change in seasons is causing the water to taste and smell weird in Atlanta, but officials are assuring residents that it is safe to drink.

According to the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM), preliminary assessments indicate that the reported taste and odor concerns are likely associated with low levels of naturally occurring organic compounds Methylisoborneol (MIB) and Geosmin found in the Chattahoochee River.

In a Facebook video, Jess Sterling, technical programs director for the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, said most of the drinking water comes from Lake Lanier, which is a huge reservoir formed by the Chattahoochee River.
