Fresno businessman Kyle Kirkland launched a campaign for Congress on Wednesday, challenging Rep. Jim Costa (D–Fresno) in the 21st district.

This is Kirkland’s second attempt at Congress in the last two years, after he ran in the 20th district last year in the special election to fill the vacancy created when former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy resigned.

Driving the news: Kirkland is the owner of Fresno cardroom Club One Casino and is the president of the California Gaming Association. • Previously, Kirkland was the chairman of Steinway Musical Instruments for 17 years. • He has also been heavily involved in animal welfare through his own animal rescue, the Kirkland Foundation, and as the board chair of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo Corporation.
