BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says a 76-year-old man has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting in a 38-year-old Burton cold case murder.

Cortez Sabino Lake, of Beaufort, is charged with murder in connection with the November 1987 killing of Margit G. Schuller, Investigator Bob Bromage said.

He was arrested on Tuesday, deputies said.

Advanced forensic technology and a renewed look at the case led to Lake’s arrest.

The 1987 killing

Deputies responded at approximately 8:45 p.m. on the night of Nov. 1, 1987, to the Palmetto Apartments on Harding Street in Burton where Schuller had been found shot to death near the apartment complex’s laundry room.
