ANN ARBOR, Mich. — TJ Metcalf watched the jet sweep unfold in front of him, with the Northwestern quarterback handing the football off to receiver Drew Wagner racing toward the short side of the field.

As Wagner turned up and tried to outrun the Michigan defense during the second quarter of the Wolverines’ 24-22 win at Wrigley Field, there was Metcalf — squared, standing up and ready to make the tackle.

“It looked like he was going to pass the ball, holding it like a sack of potatoes,” Metcalf recalled Tuesday night. “He ran up to me, then he jumped into the air and I’m like, ‘Naw, he tripping.’”
