JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - The Jackson County Board of Commissioners and Blackman Charter Township officials are opposing a proposed road diet by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
A road diet is a traffic calming strategy that involves reducing the number of lanes on a road.
MDOT is proposing changes for East Michigan Avenue from Page Avenue to US-127. The project would downsize the roadway from four lanes to two, with a single shared center turn lane.
According to MDOT, 2,000 ft of the reconstruction is in Blackman Township. And, Township Treasurer Phil Preston says the area’s last road diet posed many issues.
“It [was] a real problem. The project took far longer than was anticipated, creating problems all summer long and into the school year,” said Preston.
