The Bremer Avenue bridge is slated to open Wednesday, Nov. 26, if the weather continues to cooperate, according to Pete Hjelmstad, field services coordinator for the Iowa Department of Transportation.

“Bottom line is, we are looking at opening it at the end of the day on the 26th,” he told Waverly Newspapers Nov. 18. “We [will] remove the barricades and let it open.”

“End of the day” is whenever the work is finished that day, not a particular time.

The main bridge that connects the east and west sides of Waverly has been out of commission since Aug. 5, 2024. The original completion date was around Labor Day of this year, but with high water in the Cedar River delaying construction multiple times, in May the DOT moved the finish date to “around Nov. 28.”
