A federal grand jury in Miami on Wednesday indicted Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and several co-defendants, charging them with stealing roughly $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster-relief funds and funneling the money into her 2021 congressional campaign, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

The indictment alleges that Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents Florida’s 20th District covering parts of Broward and Palm Beach counties, and her brother Edwin Cherfilus diverted an overpayment linked to a COVID-19 vaccination-staffing contract awarded to their family home-health-care business.
