Some two and a half minutes into Wednesday night’s game against Loyola Maryland at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, after sealing off a defender and spinning around for an easy bucket off the glass, Duquesne center John Hugley IV was drenched in sweat.
The Dukes led 11-2, and Hugley already had nine points. Loyola pulled back to within eight at the half, but Duquesne never broke much of a sweat the rest of the way.
Hugley scored 20 points and Cam Crawford and Tarence Guinyard poured in 19 apiece as the Dukes (4-1) breezed to a 92-78 win over the Greyhounds (2-4) of the Patriot League. Following the game, seated at the table inside the arena’s press room, coach Dru Joyce III was asked if Duquesne is the deepest team in the league.
It’s early, of course — and Atlantic 10 play still doesn’t start u
