We leave debate about the value of the current federal crackdown on illegal immigrants to others. We suspect questions of cost and efficacy will only be resolved by detailed reviews of the facts in the future, when enough hard data is available to parse.

And we hope the decision to name the latest surge of enforcement in North Carolina after the beloved children’s book “Charlotte’s Web” was a deliberate attempt to tweak the noses of those critical of the effort. We say “hope” because it’s very hard to believe anyone who actually read the book would misuse the title in such a way.
