LUFKIN, Texas (KTRE) - Homelessness and hunger disproportionately affect rural communities, including those in East Texas, and data show homelessness in Angelina County is getting worse.

The Alcohol and Drug Awareness Council in Lufkin says that substance abuse plays a role in homelessness in this area, and said it’s important to bring awareness to this issue.

“People run out of resources, and they run out of choices, and they end up on the street. We try to plug the holes and refer people to places, but there are not enough resources to handle the problem,” Brad Bell, the clinical director for ADAC, said.

November is National Homeless and Hunger Awareness Month, and Bell said that in Angelina County, substance use plays a part in the prominent homeless issue in this area.
