TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - Susan Branin’s daughter, Micayla, was 5 years old when she had her first seizure. After a year of doctor’s visits, it was a visit to Cook’s Children’s in Fort Worth that finally got them her diagnosis.
“There’s not enough knowledge and awareness,” said Branin.
According to the CDC , it’s estimated 3 million Americans live with epilepsy. Micayla died from SUDEP, which is Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. The CDC says SUDEP occurs in one in 1,000 adults with epilepsy every year.
Before she passed away, Micayla started Embracing Hope , an organization aimed at promoting epilepsy awareness and community.
“She knew the need, and she wanted to go worldwide,” explained her mother.
