Director Karan Johar has openly discussed how being seen as effeminate since childhood caused him to endure bullying, develop insecurities, and face a prolonged emotional struggle. At the age of 15, Karan revealed he spent three years taking voice-coaching classes to mitigate his effeminate voice, a fact he kept hidden from his late father, producer Yash Johar.
