Kellie Sloane is poised to become the new leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party following the resignation of Mark Speakman. Speakman announced his departure during a press conference, where he endorsed Sloane, the first-term Member for Vaucluse, as his successor. This leadership change comes amid a turbulent period for the party, with Speakman’s resignation marking the second leadership departure in just three days.
Sloane confirmed her intention to run for the leadership position shortly after Speakman’s announcement. She expressed her gratitude for his leadership and support, stating, "I have enormous respect for Mark and thank him for his leadership of our party ... I appreciate his endorsement of me."
The decision for Speakman to step down followed increasing pressure from party members for renewal and a fresh direction. He noted that several colleagues had indicated a desire for a new leader, saying, "A number of colleagues had indicated to me their preference that we have renewal and regeneration and a new leader."
Sloane, who was elected in the 2023 state election, has quickly risen to prominence within the party. Before entering politics, she had a successful career in journalism, working for major networks such as ABC, Nine, and Seven. She also served as the CEO of Life Education Australia, known for its Healthy Harold mascot. In her inaugural speech to parliament, Sloane highlighted her motivation for entering politics, stating she felt frustrated by her lack of direct influence in journalism.
As a shadow minister, Sloane has been active in addressing key issues, including illegal tobacco and the pressures facing the state's healthcare system. She has also been vocal about antisemitism, particularly in light of recent events involving a neo-Nazi rally outside the NSW parliament.
The leadership contest will also see Alister Henskens, a member of the right faction, vying for the position. Henskens has held various ministerial roles since his election in 2015 and is seen as a strong contender. The party room meeting to elect the new leader is scheduled for Friday.
Speakman’s resignation follows a series of challenges for the NSW Liberals, including poor polling and a recent by-election loss to Labor in Kiama. He acknowledged the impact of federal party disarray on the state branch, stating, "I have faced the brand damage that has emanated from Canberra with disarray since the May election."
As the NSW Liberals prepare for the leadership vote, Sloane’s candidacy represents a potential shift in the party’s direction as it seeks to regain public support ahead of the next state election, which is less than 18 months away. The outcome of this leadership change could significantly influence the party's strategy moving forward.
