CUPE 5430, representing more than 14,000 healthcare workers across the province, is voicing concerns surrounding a new policy implemented by the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

General Vice President for Region 4 out of Weyburn, Arlene Picard, explains this policy sets a new work standard for rural emergency rooms, allowing them to remain open even if minimal staff are on site and without adequate diagnostic, imaging, or support staff available.

“We've had a lot of the emergency room staff upset over this because they're lowering the number of nurses in the emergency rooms. You can imagine the anxiousness of the nurses in those areas having one less professional to help out in emergency situations.”
