CLEVELAND — Nearly a year and a half after flames tore through the roof of St. Theodosius Orthodox Christian Cathedral in Tremont , the path toward restoring one of Cleveland ’s most recognizable landmarks is finally taking shape, but not without financial and logistical hurdles.
The May 2024 fire, ruled accidental, erupted just two weeks before roof restoration on the historic cathedral was set to be completed. Damage was extensive, totaling an estimated $17 million.
Insurance covered just over $10 million, but nearly $3 million of that amount was immediately spent on emergency stabilization, including scaffolding, engineering work and a temporary roof to protect what remained of the structure. That left the cathedral with a shortfall of roughly $2.5 million before full restoration
