Cottage cheese fans across Montreal may have noticed a gap in the dairy aisle lately.

A labour dispute at one of the province’s leading cottage cheese plants in the town of Amqui, Quebec, paired with a surge in demand have made it harder for some to get their fix of the lumpy dairy product.

About 100 employees walked off the job Oct. 12 at the Agropur plant in Amqui, which produces Sealtest cottage cheese, according to Agropur spokesperson Guillaume Bérubé. One day later, the company locked out the employees — and hasn’t produced cottage cheese in Quebec since.

“Amqui is our main plant in Eastern Canada that produces cottage cheese. We have other plants in Western Canada. So the impact is really on the east side of the country,” Bérubé said in an interview Tuesday.
