HARRISBURG, Pa. —

Pennsylvania has joined 27 other states to pass the CROWN Act, which protects against racial discrimination based on hair type, hair texture, or protective hairstyle like braids, twists, knots and locs.

State Rep. La'Tasha D. Mayes said the passage of the bill is a win for all because it puts an end to another form of discrimination in Pennsylvania communities. Advertisement

"The CROWN Act is about respect, is about creating more openness, and this bill makes our state more fair, more just and more free for more Pennsylvanians," Mayes, D-Pittsburgh, said Thursday.

CROWN stands for Creating a Respectful Open World for Natural Hair. The bill passed overwhelmingly in the Pennsylvania Senate 44-3, with three additional non-votes.
