DALHART, Texas (KFDA) - Homestead tax exemptions are set to increase, meaning lower payments for homeowners, but less funding going into area school districts.

Dalhart Superintendent Jeff Byrd says while he is a taxpayer and loves the idea of lower taxes, 70% to 85% of school funding comes from property taxes.

“Our people do a great job paying their taxes and taking care of the school district, the city, the county, the first responders,” says Byrd. “Again, we are really really blessed here.”

Byrd says as of right now, funds are going to be supplemented by state funding, but worries how long that will keep up as it does not match up dollar for dollar.
