U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has suggested Canada has set a “new precedent” by asserting itself into American politics with the recent anti-tariff ads that featured former president Ronald Reagan.
Speaking at the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters’ national conference in Ottawa on Tuesday, Hoekstra had a warning for federal and provincial governments, asking them to “seriously consider” whether the controversial ad produced by the Ontario government will help Canada achieve its goals, stating the ads amounted to helping the country “participate in our electoral politics.”
The ads, which aired in the United States last month, featured Reagan criticizing tariffs. The ad spots prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to suspend all trade negotiations with Canada.
