IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - He helped the Hawkeyes advance to four bowl games, including the Rose Bowl in the 80’s, and now he’s back as an honorary captain.
Jay Norvell will be in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday when the University of Iowa Hawkeyes play against the Michigan State Spartans.
Norvell was a defensive back, helping the Hawks win 35 games in his time there, and named as the first-team All-Big Ten honoree and an Iowa MVP when he played in his senior year in 1985. That year he also racked up seven interceptions and 76 tackles.
Norvell never left the sport after he graduated, turning his focus on coaching.
He started by serving as a graduate assistant with Hayden Fry from 1986 to 1987. From there, he coached at UNI in 1988, Wisconsin from 1989 to 1994, and then Iowa State from 1995 t
