BEREA, Ohio -- A West Street resident lost $89,800 through a computer and telephone scam.
The resident told police he was operating his computer Nov. 15 when the screen turned black.
A message on the screen said his computer was compromised and instructed him to call Microsoft support.
The resident called the number provided on his screen. A scammer answered and asked the resident to give him control of his computer. The resident complied.
The scammer told the resident that his firewall had been infiltrated. He said he would repair the firewall.
The scammer then gained access to the resident’s bank account.
On Nov. 16, the scammer called the resident and told him to send $11,000 for the firewall repair.
The resident obtained 11 money orders, each for $1,000, and sent them through a
