GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Thanksgiving is less than a week away, and the Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) has shared tips on how to ensure your feast doesn't go up in flames.
Fire officials said Thanksgiving remains the top day for kitchen fires in the United States. In Grand Rapids, kitchen fires accounted for more than 25% of structure fires last year.
According to GRFD, unattended cooking is the largest contributing, yet preventable, factor for house fires.
Here are some tips from GRFD on how to keep your home safe this holiday:
If you're boiling, grilling, frying, or broiling, it's recommended that a responsible person stay in the kitchen.
Don’t let yourself become distracted, as a stove or oven fire can lead to a kitchen fire beyond your ability to control.
