China is building the Deep-Sea All-Weather Resident Floating Research Facility, a floating artificial island designed to withstand nuclear blasts. It is a 78,000-tonne, semi-submersible twin-hull platform and is the world’s first mobile, self-sustaining artificial island.
The new facility is almost as large as China’s newest Fujian aircraft carrier and can support 238 people for four months without needing new supplies. When it becomes operational in 2028, it will be able to operate far from home and project major power across disputed seas in a way not seen before, claimed Chinese scientists who spoke to the South China Morning Post.
