Grove Street Bicycles, an institution for Jersey City cyclists over the last 17 years, has closed.
The bicycle shop announced the closure in a post on social media on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
“Well unfortunately, that's a wrap," Grove Street Bicycles wrote. "The overwhelming financial burden of running a bike shop has given us no choice but to permanently close. We have loved every moment of serving our community and we will miss you all. We are not moving or reopening under a different name. We are very grateful for the support you have shown the shop for all these years.”
Bike enthusiasts expressed shock and sadness over the closure.
"My heart truly hurts reading this," one commenter wrote. "This shop wasn’t just a place to buy or fix a bike — it was a part of the community, a place where people always felt welcomed, supported, and treated with kindness. The shop will be deeply missed, far more than you know. Wishing everyone that held this shop down through the years strength, peace, and brighter days ahead. "
"I am deeply saddened to see the closure of Grove Street Bicycles," another commenter said. "What a huge loss to our Jersey City community! The shop always had a warm, welcoming, professional atmosphere which is increasingly rare in this world of national/multinational chain stores and online resellers."
"Truly the end of an era," another person commented. "We bought my kids’ first bikes from you, and we’ll always remember the kindness and care you put into your shop and customers."
