NIAGARA, Wis. (WBAY) - The Wisconsin Department of Justice on Thursday released the names of a driver who died during a police chase and the officer chasing him as its investigation continues.
Officer Rhianna Carne attempted a traffic stop at 1 o’clock in the afternoon on Nov. 5, but the driver, 57-year-old Steve Mecklenburg, took off at high speed.
A statement from the DOJ says Mecklenburg swerved into oncoming traffic on Main Street and crashed into a commercial truck. He died soon after despite lifesaving efforts.
Carne is on administrative leave, in accordance with department policies. The DOJ says the officer has two years of law enforcement experience.
The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case with help from Niagara Rescue, the Niagara Fire Department
