SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

One of the accused conspirators in a California political corruption case involving the theft of campaign funds pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday in Sacramento.

Sean McCluskie, the former chief of staff for former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud charge in connection with the theft of his longtime boss’ dormant campaign funds.

McCluskie is at the center of what federal prosecutors argued was an enrichment scheme that also ensnared Dana Williamson, a former chief of staff to Gov. Gavin Newsom . McCluskie and a third co-conspirator, Sacramento lobbyist Greg Campbell, have signed plea agreements with federal prosecutors.
