A Republican event in northeast Pennsylvania featuring Kyle Rittenhouse, the man acquitted of murdering two people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Wisconsin, has been canceled amid a public backlash.

The rally organized by the NEPA Republicans was intended to pump up Republicans ahead of next year’s midterms, although the Republican Party of Luzerne County denied any connection to the event, reported the Scranton Times-Tribune .

“I want to make it absolutely clear that the Luzerne County Republican Committee is not associated with this event in any capacity,” said Chairwoman Lee Ann McDermott in a Nov. 11 statement posted on the committee’s Facebook page .
