Sharon Woynarski purchased her home in Swift Creek Estates west of Calgary in 2020, and she says since then at least two fire hydrants in the community have been tagged as out of service.

"It's really frightening as a homeowner," she told CBC News.

What complicates the issue is the company that owns the nine fire hydrants in Swift Creek Estates doesn't believe they are actually to be used in the event of a fire.

Westridge Utilities Inc., a private company that took over the water infrastructure in the subdivision in 2011, says the hydrants' sole purpose is to help maintain the community's drinking water, which Westridge provides to the community through the same water lines.
