DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) -- Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen said that Iowa is like many other states where homeowners are seeing their insurance premiums getting more expensive. He said that the increase in extreme weather events is behind some of the higher costs to homeowners.
Derechos, straight line winds, and heavier rains have increased in recent years. They can cause damage in wider areas -- even compared to tornadoes -- and that has insurance carriers reassessing coverage plans for homeowners.
They may raise premiums to offset the additional damages caused by the extreme weather. Sometimes they are not letting homeowners renew their policies.
