WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - A former Walgreens on the corner of State Street and Eastern Boulevard is being eyed as a new location for a credit union, filling an empty building.
Council member Ben Shoen is all for it. But, he says city zoning is making it difficult for businesses like the credit union to move in.
“I think if council wants to make a change, let’s make some changes,” he said.
Shoen wants to turn the property into a commercial property. Currently, it’s zoned as a neighborhood mixed-use property, meaning it could be considered residential, commercial, or recreational.
That zoning classification also means that businesses moving in need a special use permit from the city’s zoning board of appeals, and to get that, the city’s zoning board is asking for the removal of some o
