Not only are more Edmontonians dying on the roads, more and more are being pulled over for excessive speeding.

The Edmonton Police Commission was updated about the city’s street carnage at Thursday’s meeting at city hall.

Deputy police chief Devin Laforce told the commission that the city marked its 30th traffic fatality on Friday. There were 26 fatal collisions through all of 2024, and 24 in 2023.

“Nearly half of the collisions involved speeding drivers,” said Laforce.

He said the number of people who have been pulled over for speeding in excess of 50 km/h over the posted limit is up 19 per cent this year. And, as the roads become icy as temperatures drop, Laforce said it’s time for chronic leadfoots to ease off on their gas
