GANANOQUE – Mayor John Beddows says newly confirmed structural data from the demolition of the King Street train bridge shows the town’s long-closed crossing had deteriorated beyond repair, and stands as a cautionary example of what happens when municipal assets go without maintenance.
The demolition, approved in a 4-3 council vote earlier this year, is being carried out under a contract worth up to $488,900. According to Beddows, conditions uncovered during the teardown affirm that both the overland and over-water sections of the structure were unsound, with years of moisture trapped beneath a wooden boardwalk accelerating decay.
