BUFFALO, N.Y. — Darryl Boyd died of cancer earlier this year, just months before a trial he fought for to go after the County of Erie for his wrongful conviction.
Lola Allen, Boyd's niece, said "This was the moment my uncle had been waiting for since the day he got locked up at 16."
Boyd, John Walker Jr, Floyd Martin, Darren Gibson, and Tyrone Woodruff were arrested and charged in connection with the murder of William Crawford in 1976. Boyd was part of a group that came to be known as The Buffalo Five.
Crawford was killed at his home on Fillmore Avenue in Buffalo.
Allen and Boyd's 83-year-old mom, Thomacenia Knight, attended the trial in Rochester. It took a jury about an hour to return the $80 million dollar verdict.
"Everything's working out now. I just miss my son."
