MOAB, Utah — A weather balloon launched from Spokane collided with a United passenger flight while the plane was flying over Moab, Utah, in mid-October.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a report Thursday detailing that the plane was traveling from Denver to Los Angeles around 7 a.m. on Oct. 16, and was cruising when the captain noticed an object on the horizon. Before he could alert his co-pilot, the balloon collided with the plane, causing one side of the plane's windshield to shatter.
The NTSB report shows that both pilots were showered with glass, and the captain was cut several times on his arm. The co-pilot was not injured, and no passengers were injured.
The crew diverted the flight to land in Salt Lake City, Utah, due to the damage.
