NEW YORK —

Around 7.6 million people were unemployed in September 2025, raising the unemployment rate to a four-year high of 4.4%. This is based on the monthly employment situation report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The unemployment rate is computed from a monthly survey called the Current Population Survey (CPS). People are considered unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the past four weeks, and are currently available for work.

Among the industries seeing a decline in the workforce is the federal government.

The federal workforce reported a loss of 3,000 jobs in September, as the private sector gained 97,000 positions.
