GRIMES, Iowa —

The special census in Grimes has resumed after being paused due to the government shutdown.

Starting Thursday, field census workers are visiting homeowners who did not fill out the form online. The federal employees will have an ID from the U.S. Census Bureau. Workers will ask about the number of people living inside the home and the occupants' ages.

City officials say Grimes has grown by more than 3,700 people since the last census in 2020. Its estimated population now sits at just over 19,000.
